Blog From digg.com

As I was going through some of the stories on digg.com, I noticed a blog link next to the “digg this story” link. I can now blog about a story directly from digg.com. It supports Blogger, Live Journal, Moveable Type, Typepad, and my blogging software, WordPress.

Wardrive - March 30

Today started out with my trying to find the Van Slyke house on Ramapo Mountain State Forest in Oakland, NJ but turned into another wardrive with 404 APs. This brings my total up to 5133 APs. I took Rt 287 to get to Oakland, but since I didn’t find what I was originally looking for, I decided to take Rt 202 home so the day wouldn’t be a total loss. If only I could get my DeLorme Earthmate USB GPS to work in Linux so I could try Kismet.

Wardrive - March 25

I went wardriving again today. This time, I went to Manville and some parts of Somerville. I came across 472 APs, only 123 had WEP/WPA encryption turned on, and 121 were still using the default SSID. So far this month, I have found 978 APs. I still plan on going wardriving again next week while I’m on vacation. I’ll be heading to Hillsborough and a few Weird NJ spots including Grover’s Mill (the place where H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds took place).

RSSOwl 1.1

RSSOwl, the RSS feed reader I’ve been using lately has been updated to version 1.1. Included in this version are:
1) A ToolBar that contains most common actions like “Goto next unread News” or “Mark All Read”,
2) Import Blogrolls from popular services like Bloglines and synchronize the list of Newsfeeds, and
3) Popup Blocker for the Internal Browser

I’ve already downloaded it and installed it onto my computer and it is now the only reader I use.

de.lirio.us

de.lirio.us is a social bookmarking site very similar to del.icio.us except it allows you to enter a long description into the body of the post. Like del.icio.us, it’s an online bookmark manager so if you are surfing the web from another computer, you can still get to all your bookmarks. It also lets you share your bookmarks with others so you can find other sites that may interest you.

Wardrive - March 24

I went out for a wardrive today. I decided to drive around some of towns I used to go to when I worked for UnitedNational/UnitedTrust Bank. So I was in Blairstown, Belvidere, Phillipsburg, and Greenwich along with all the towns along the way. I came across 368 APs with 81 being set to the default SSID, and 266 without WEP/WPA encryption turned on. For a very rural area, it had more APs than I would’ve expected. I’ll be doing more wardrives when I go on vacation next week. On my list of places are: Hillsborough, Somerville, and whatever Weird NJ places I go to.

John Z DeLorean 1925-2005

John Z. DeLorean, the man who brought us the Pontiac GTO and the DeLorean (obviously), died late Saturday night from complications of a recent stroke. If it weren’t for this man, who knows what the time machine in Back to the Future would’ve been. I’ve always wanted a DeLorean. He even had a dealership down the street from my house. I’ve had the chance to meet him a couple of times and he was always a very nice man. I had always hoped one day there would be a new DeLorean sports car.

Wardrive - March 18

I went out for a wardrive with the new card today and it picked up a lot of access points that the old card didn’t. I found 669 APs, out of which only 196 had WEP/WPA encryption turned on. I have noticed that more and more APs I come across do have some type of encryption turned on. It’s almost to the point where it’s 50% of all APs.

I Got My ORiNOCO Card Today

I ordered my Proxim 8410-WD Orinoco 802.11b Classic Gold PC Card Monday night from Amazon.com. When I ordered it, I chose free shipping which was supposed to take 5-9 days, which put the arrival date on March 22. I even got an email this morning saying my order was shipped. When I walked out the door this morning to go to work, it was already sitting on my front porch. So much for waiting another week ;-)

My Digg News

I’ve added new links to the sidebar to the news I dig on digg.com. digg.com is a site similar to Slashdot except 15 people need to “dig” the story for it to show up on the front page. I got introduced to it by Kevin Rose.
