Wardrive - April 24

I went wardriving today on the 1 year anniversary of joining WiGLE. I went down to Red Bank to “discover uncharted territory”. I also went down to Red Bank because I am a big fan of View Askew Productions. Those of you who don’t recognize the name, you may recognize some of the movies, Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and Jersey Girl. While I was in Red Bank, I stopped by some of the locations from the movies. I went to Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, which has an SSID of Snootchie Bootchies, and I also stopped off at RST Video and the infamous Quick Stop. So I had to go in and buy a Gatorade and a can of Pringles (you have to see Clerks to understand why). After I eat all the Pringles, I will turn the can into a cantenna.

Alchemy

I just flashed the firmware in my Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router with a hacked version from Sveasoft. It adds a lot of features the factory firmware does not provide, like the ability to telnet into the router and install other applications. The next thing I want to do to the router is install Snort so that I can have some level of intrusion detection and alerting inside the access point. I got the original idea from Kevin Rose’s segment on The ScreenSavers

Wardrive - April 21

I went wardriving today on my day off through the Hills in Bedminster. I came across 1063 APs, only 316 were encrypted, 747 were open, and 342 were still set to the default SSID. This brings me up to 8871 APs, with 2523 protected with WEP/WPA, 6348 unprotected, and 2659 set to the default SSID. I have to look over my map to see where I have left to go.

Opera 8.0

Opera 8.0 was released today. It has a new look to it but not drastic. It still has tabbed browsing just like every other browser that’s not Internet Explorer. It has full support for GMail and it is the first browser with voice support (meaning you can browse the web using spoken commands). It is also the first browser to natively support Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) files. One cool thing I noticed about the new Opera was the blue RSS graphic in the address bar when you’re visiting a site with an RSS feed. It’s similar to the orange symbol you get in Firefox.

Netgear Wireless Router For $2.50

I picked up a Netgear WGR614 802.11g Wireless Router from Staples today. CompUSA has the same router on special for $29.99 but Staples is offering it for $54.94 with a $25 Easy Rebate. So, all you have to do is go to Staples, have them price match the router to CompUSA’s price and submit the Easy Rebate. With Staples‘ 110% Price Match policy, the price of the router becomes $27.49 at the register and then after the $25 Easy Rebate, your final cost is $2.50. I normally prefer Linksys products but I couldn’t pass up on this deal.

Wardrive - April 16

I went wardriving tonight through Hillsborough and came across 490 APs, 148 were protected with encryption, 342 were not, and 130 still had the default SSID that it came with out of the box. This brings me up to 8024 APs, 2272 protected, 5752 not protected, and 2391 still on the default SSID. I expect the APs set to the default to change once the next version of NetStumbler comes out. There are a lot of APs that are not being detected properly as far as vendor. They’re being recorded as [Fake] and there for offset the numbers a little.

Motorola HS820 Bluetooth Headset

I finally picked up a Motorola HS820 Bluetooth Headset for my Motorola V551. This will allow me to talk on the cell phone without having to hold the phone to my ear and without any wires running from the headset to the phone. This will especially help since New Jersey has a law which prohibits the use of hand-held cell phones while driving.

Wardrive - April 14

I went wardriving today, this time finishing up Raritan, most of Dunellen, and parts of Old Bridge. I came across 814 APs, 234 were encrypted, 580 were not, and 210 were still set to the default SSID. So far, I have found 7275 APs, 2014 were secured with encryption, 5261 were open, and 2218 were still set to the factory SSID.

Wardrive - April 9

I had to drop a few things off at my cousin’s house in Stockton which is a few miles south of Flemington so I decided to wardrive my way there and back. I also finished off Somerville and did a few small areas of Bridgewater. I came across 595 APs, 185 had encryption turned on, 410 didn’t, and 142 were set to the default SSID. This brings me up to 6603 APs, with only 1825 encrypted, 4778 without encryption, and 2069 still set to the default SSID.

Wardrive - April 8

I went wardriving today through Somerville and a little bit of Hillsborough and came across 536 APs. 167 APs were encrypted, 369 were not encrypted, and 143 were still set to the default SSID. Now, I have to look at the map and make sure I didn’t miss any parts of Somerville before I move onto Hillsborough.
