For the last few years, I have been a New Jersey Devils hockey fan. Some people think I’m a fan because they’ve been winning championships lately but it’s because I couldn’t understand the rules until recently. One of the programs I have running on my computer is ESPN’s BottomLine which is a ticker for sports scores and news. Imagine my surprise when one of the headlines that popped up said “Devils ‘hellbent’ against proposal to change name”. I immediately clicked on the headline to find out what it was about. Basically, according to this story, State Assemblyman Craig Stanley doesn’t particularly like the nickname “Devils” because he thinks the team was named for the Christian symbol for the Antichrist, so he’s introducing a resolution into the Assembly next month to change the name. The reason why he seems to care about the name is that he is a Baptist deacon and his legislative district includes parts of Newark, where the Devils are scheduled to move into a $310 million, 18,000-seat downtown arena in September 2007. Every Devils fan knows the team was named for the ‘New Jersey Devil’.
The Jersey Devil has batlike wings, a forked tail and oversized claws; and is said to terrorize the Pine Barrens. The most popular story says that Mrs. Leeds, a poor woman with twelve children, found out she was pregnant with another child and cursed it; supposedly exclaiming “I don’t want any more children! Let it be a devil.” There are variations of the story that say the baby was born perfectly healthy and then transformed into the Devil before flying up the chimney; or that the baby was born already disfigured.
According to the ESPN article, acting Governor Richard Codey agrees that the name should stay as is. Something tells me that assemblyman won’t be too popular with Devils fans in Newark after this.
