One Year Ago Today

I started my blog one year ago today. I originally started with Blogger but two months later, I switched to WordPress. In that year, I’ve had over a quarter of a million hits from over 20,000 people. I’ve been averaging about a thousand hits a day. As of right now, I have almost 500 hits from about 150 people for today. I want to change some of the colors on the site and maybe add a header image.

20 Years Ago Today

I was going through the Giants website when I noticed a “Today In History” box mentioning

November 18, 1985 – Jay Schroeder comes off the bench to replace an injured Joe Theismann to lead the Washington Redskins to a 23-21 win over the Giants on Monday Night Football.

This means it was 20 years ago today that Lawrence Taylor ended Joe Theismann’s career. It was also the first time they used instant replay in Monday Night Football. After the incident, they replayed it over and over again. I’m still trying to find a copy of the video on the internet but for those of you who have not seen the video yet, Lawrence Taylor (Hall of Fame Linebacker) tackled Joe Theismann in the second quarter of a Monday Night Football game. As LT tackled him, Joe’s leg, the area between the knee and the ankle, bent in a 45 degree angle. I was only 10 when they played the game so I didn’t get to see it happen live but when I was watching I Love the 80’s 3-D on VH1 a while ago, they played the clip.
MSNBC has also mentioned the incident in a story. So has the Houston Chronicle

UPDATE: Thanks to Technorati, I found another blogger posting about the same “anniversary”. He has a link to the video clip but it doesn’t seem to be working right now. If I can get a copy of the clip, I’ll post it here. The link to the clip he gives in his post is here.

UPDATE: I finally was able to get a hold of the video of LT breaking Joe Theismann’s leg. You can see it either on the previous link or here

I have embedded the video here.

Juice

The first podcatching client I used has changed its name from iPodder Lemon to Juice. The screenshots still show the iPodder name. I’ve been using iTunes to download my podcasts but I might download Juice to see if it’s any different other than names.

30gigs.com Email

I was going through Digg.com and came across a post about an exploit to get a 30gigs.com email address without needing an invite. 30gigs.com is similar to a GMail account except you get 30 gigs of storage instead of the 2.5+ that Google is offering right now. After I created my account, I have 7 invites to give out compared to the 100 invites I have on each of my GMail accounts. I’m gonna try it out and see if you really do get 30GB of storage space.

The Gator Returns To The Bronx

Ron Guidry has been named the pitching coach for the New York Yankees for the 2006 season replacing Mel Stottlemyre. First the Yanks bring back 2 years ago Donnie Baseball for their hitting coach, and now The Gator is the pitching coach. After I heard Mel Stottlemyre was leaving (because of disagreements with The Boss - and I don’t mean Bruce Springsteen), I was hoping they would either bring in Guidry or Goose Gossage.

iHome iH5

iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPodI’ve had the iHome iH5 Clock Radio for iPod for a few months now and thought I’d blogged about it so I’m doing it now. It’s something I’ve been waiting for somebody to make ever since I got my iPod last November. It’s an alarm clock radio that allows you to wake up and fall asleep to the radio (either AM or FM) or your iPod. It works with every iPod including the Shuffle, Nano, and the new iPod that can play video. The sound quality is amazing. You don’t need the volume turned up very high to hear everything clearly. It’s very similar in sound quality to the Bose systems everyone brags about. The only downside with the radio is that there aren’t any presets which doesn’t bother me too much since I don’t listen to the radio that often. The backlight on the clock is extremely bright on it’s highest setting (of which there are 3). It took me a few nights to get used to even the lowest setting which still illuminates my bedroom better than a nightlight.
There are a few drawbacks to the alarm feature. The first drawback is that instead of using time zone abbreviations such as “ET” or “CT,” the iH5’s display uses numbers 1 through 7. It comes preset for Eastern Standard Time and there’s a +1/-1 switch on the back to spring forward/fall back for when Daylight Savings Time starts and ends. People outside EST/EDT will have to figure out which zone they’re in and adjust the clock accordingly. The second drawback is that there is only one alarm. My old alarm clock radio had two alarms. I could set one for weekdays and the other for weekends. Now I have to change it from one time to the next. The last drawback has to do with the snooze feature. When you hit the snooze button, you get 9 (yes, nine) extra minutes of sleep. Why would they choose a time like 9 minutes? Why couldn’t they do one extra minute for an even 10?
There is an optional remote control for $20 that I’m thinking of getting. When your iPod is in the iH5, you have to change tracks using the click wheel on the iPod. There isn’t a forward/reverse button on the iH5, only a play/pause button. I’ve tried changing tracks a few times and it feels a little strange. The remote allows you to turn the iH5 on and off, switch between radio and iPod modes, control iPod playback, change radio stations, adjust the brightness of the LCD and to snooze the alarm. That last feature I doubt I would ever need but it’s nice to know it’s there.

Alert Bar

Looking over the stats on my sites, I have noticed that over 50% of the people that come here use Internet Explorer. I have installed the Spread Firefox plugin to pop up an alert bar when someone views this site with IE, and only IE. If you view the site with any other browser, the alert bar won’t show. I did this in an attempt to educate people how inferior IE is as a web browser and that there are other options out there that are safer to use. The link in the alert bar takes the person to a site where they can download Firefox but they can also download Opera, Flock, or Netscape as a web browser. Any of those are better choices than that damn blue e.

Christmas Music Already

I was going through the iTunes Music Store today and noticed they’re already pushing holiday (mostly Christmas) music. It’s too early for Christmas music. Halloween was just yesterday and we still have 3 1/2 weeks till Thanksgiving. There shouldn’t be any reference to Christmas or Christmas music until Black Friday, or at least the week Thanksgiving falls on.

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

I picked up Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (Widescreen Edition) from Best Buy earlier today to complete my Star Wars collection. Now I have all 6 movies on DVD. I just wish the original Star Wars Trilogy was exactly like I remember it. There’s a lot of things they screwed up in the original trilogy when they released it on DVD, including the ending to Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi where they changed the ghost of Anakin Skywalker from the old guy that played him at the end of the movie to Hayden Christensen who plays Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Star Wars - Episode II, Attack of the Clones and Star Wars, Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.
