Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview

Microsoft has released a public beta release of Internet Explorer 7. Some of the new features (for Internet Explorer but not new for every other browser available) include tabbed browsing and an RSS reader. It also protects users from phishing sites. Here are the summaries of the new features according to Microsoft:

New Interface
Say goodbye to bulky toolbars. Internet Explorer 7 has a new interface that shows more of each webpage you visit. The streamlined toolbar makes it easier to add websites to your Favorites, search the web, clear your history, and access the other tasks and tools you use most.
Tabbed Browsing
Whether you’re searching the web, comparing prices, or just staying on top of your favorite topic, Internet Explorer 7 lets you view many different websites at one time — all within one organized window.
Search
Internet Explorer 7 brings your favorite web search providers to you. With the built-in search box, you can search the web at any time without having to open a search provider page. You can display search results in a separate tab, and then open the results in other tabs to quickly compare sites and find the information you want. You can even customize your search by setting your favorite search provider as the default.
RSS Feeds
Don’t waste time checking many different sites and blogs for updates. Just select the sites or topics you care about and Internet Explorer 7 delivers all the new headlines and updates to your Favorites Center.
Security
Internet Explorer 7 helps keep your information safe by alerting you to potential phishing sites — sites that look legitimate but actually are designed to capture your personal information. It’s also easier to see which sites provide secure data exchange, so you can shop and bank online with confidence.

MacGyver On Google Video

It turns out MacGyver is now available on Google Video. I already have the first 4 seasons on DVD but I just thought this was neat that it was on Google Video.

Senuti

Now that I have my new Mac, I needed to put all my music on it from my iPod. I could’ve done it the same way I do it in Windows (View hidden files and folders, navigate to iPod_Control\Music\) but the only way I can get to that folder, that I’ve learned so far, is through a terminal window. I found a program called Senuti that looks like iTunes and can copy the songs right from the iPod directly into iTunes. Normally you would have to copy the songs to your hard drive and then import them into iTunes. Senuti does it all with one click.

My New eMac

I bought an eMac the other day so I can finally learn the Mac OS. I’m slowly getting used to it since I’m accustomed to Windows and that’s all I’ve known for the last 10 years. For the next month or so, I will be using the Mac most of the time. I’m in the process now of mirroring all the software I have on my Windows machine so I can get used to how to install software on a Mac. In some ways it is easier than installing on Windows (I can’t believe I just said that). I’m actually blogging this using the Safari web browser.

Briggs Chevrolet Chevelle LS6

I’m sitting here watching the Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction on Speed Channel and the Briggs Chevrolet 1970 Chevelle LS6 just sold for $1,150,000. Yes, you read that right. One million, one hundred fifty thousand dollars. From the Barrett-Jackson site:

454cid LS6 V8 automatic transmission with 61 miles showing on the odometer. This is the car that Ray Allen drove and won just about every conceivable race entered in 1970. This car won The US Nationals, The Super Nationals, The World Finals and most of the division races that were entered. This car has gone through a frame-off restoration that was mostly built and supervised by Ray Allen himself. This car is being sold with the original New Jersey title in Truppi & Kling’s name and also comes with the original build sheet and various magazine and National Dragster articles about this World Champion Car and pictures at The Winners’ Circle. This car is truly a legend in muscle car history.

The car was bought originally for $1500. If I remember correctly, my father said that that included the flatbed to tow it on. The interesting thing about the car is that it was truely one of 17 ever made and NHRA required that at least 50 of a car be made for it to eligible for competition. Truppi-Kling was able to get a letter from Chevrolet stating that 50 were made even though there weren’t.

I’ve included an edited video of the auction that I recorded to my PC thanks to my TV tuner card

Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 150

I recently purchased a WinTV-PVR 150 TV tuner card. It allows me to watch or record live TV straight to my hard drive. Because the encoder is built into the card, my PC isn’t slowed down any while it’s recording. I purchased the card because it’s one of the cards supported by Linux and MythTV. When I build my next PC, my current PC will be turned into a MythTV server so I don’t have to buy a TiVO and pay their subscription fee.

Diamond Dave & The Radio Chick

Now that Howard Stern is no longer on regular radio, his old station, 92.3 K-Rock, has changed to 92.3 Free FM and has gone completely talk. No more music. I haven’t listened to regular radio since I got my XM radio back in July. Before I got my XM, I was undecided between XM and Sirius. The only reason I would’ve gone with Sirius is to listen to Leslie Gold, the Radio Chick. She used to be the show before Opie and Anthony when O & A were on WNEW. She’ll be doing the afternoon drive so I will get to hear some of her show on the way home from work. I might even tune into the morning show on my way into work. The morning show just happens to be Diamond Dave, David Lee Roth, former frontman for Van Halen. Even if I don’t get a chance to listen to either show, they both will have podcasts each day. I’m assuming they’ll strip the commercials out to keep the size down and in Leslie’s case they may be a day later than when the show originally aired.

Windows Live Mail Beta

Thanks to a story on digg.com, I was able to sign up for Windows Live Mail Beta without needing to be invited. The story points to this blog post which gives a few simple steps.

1) Open up Internet Explorer. MSN likes Internet Explorer, and hates Firefox. (Damn Microsoft!)
2) For this to work, you must be signed out of MSN. Go to the MSN Homepage, and double check you are signed out.
3) Copy this URL to Internet Explorer: Right Click On Here -> Copy
4) You should be redirected to another URL (Another URL to login). Sign in.
5) You should see the regular hotmail once signed in.
6) Once you see the regular hotmail, do Step #3 again. Copy the same URL above.
7) Click ‘Particpate’ on the bottom (Scroll down!) and walla!
