Pinstripes In The Park

I stuck around in the city tonight to check out “Pinstripes In The Park”. It was the Yankees-Tigers game from Detroit being broadcast on the YES network on a huge TV similar to a jumbotron. It took place at Bryant Park in the city and to make it feel more like a Yankee game at the stadium, they had backdrops next to the TV that were made to look like the left and right field walls at the foul poles. They had hot dog carts selling hot dogs (obviously), peanuts, and Cracker Jack. The prices though were a lot cheaper than at the Stadium. A hot dog was only $2 compared to $4+ that it would cost at a real Yankee game. I left once I saw the game was in a rain delay. After all, it’s not as much fun watching a Yankee game outside of Yankee Stadium.

2006 Indy 500

I just got done watching the Indy 500 and none of the drivers I would have liked to see win, did. I personally would’ve liked to have seen Michael Andretti win. If he couldn’t win then I would’ve liked to have seen Michael’s son Marco win. If neither Andretti could win, then it would’ve been nice to see Danica Patrick win. Michael could’ve won if Marco would’ve stayed behind him. Then it would’ve been Michael winning with Marco taking second place, which is what Mario Andretti said, before the race, he would’ve liked to have seen.

Full Throttle

I’m not talking about Coca-Cola’s energy drink to compete with Red Bull. While I was in Rite-Aid the other day waiting for my prescription to be filled, I was walking around the aisles and came across a product called Full Throttle. It’s a cologne by Orange County Choppers. What caught my eye was that it was in a bottle very similar to fuel system cleaner. I can see someone purchasing the cologne, swinging by a Pep Boys to get some fuel system cleaner, and then either accidentally pouring the cologne into the gas tank or splashing the fuel system cleaner on their face. Maybe the cologne could pass for fuel system cleaner.

Possible Reopening Of The Statue Of Liberty’s Crown

There are politicians lobbying to get the crown of the Statue of Liberty reopened. It has been closed since 9/11 and so far the only part reopened to the public since then is the base of the statue; and that was nearly 2 years ago. I was up in the crown years before 9/11 for a class trip. I can’t remember if it was elementary school or middle school. I wonder what it would take to reopen the torch, which has been closed for 90 years.

Bonds v. The Bambino

Barry Bonds has been tied with Babe Ruth for a few days now with 714 career homeruns and I decided it’s time for me to voice my opinion on the the subject. First of all, no matter how many homeruns Barry Bonds hits, he will never be better than the Babe. This is not a racist statement but rather a statement based on statistics. Ruth averaged fewer at-bats per homerun than Bonds, and had a higher slugging percentage than Bonds. Bonds also needs “performance enhancers” to hit homeruns out of ballparks that are shorter than the ballparks Ruth hit his homeruns in. The only “performance enhancers” Babe Ruth needed was a few hot dogs before a game to soak up the alcohol he drank the night before. Bonds also gets to play in more games per year than Ruth did in his day. If you go back in time and put Barry into the same games that Ruth hit his homeruns in, he wouldn’t come close to the 714 homeruns. Likewise, if you could put Ruth into a present day ballpark, he’d have a lot more than 714.

Apple Store Fifth Avenue

I decided to go check out the new Apple Store on Fifth Avenue last night after work. It right in front of FAO Schwartz at 59th Street. You couldn’t miss it. It’s a giant glass cube with the Apple logo floating in the middle. The place is huge compared to some of the other Apple Stores I’ve been in. It’s entirely underground and you can either take an elevator or a spiral staircase that wraps around the elevator to get in and out of the store. It’s the first store open 24/7/365. You can check out Apple’s photo gallery of the store to see what it looks like.

Heart Like A Wheel DVD

Heart Like a WheelHeart Like a Wheel, the movie about the life of Shirley Muldowney is set to be released on DVD on August 15, 2006 according to Amazon.com. Whether or not that’s the actual/final release date is unknown. From the top of the image of the DVD, I wouldn’t be surprised if NHRA sold the DVD at races in the Nitro Mall after it’s released.

Stealther

There’s a new Firefox plugin called Stealther that claims to allow a user to “surf the web without leaving a trace in your local computer“. Considering I have access to data forensics software, I may have to see how true that statement is.

Skype Out Free Until The End Of The Year

Skype announced on Monday that Skype Out will be free until the end of the year for customers in the United States and Canada to place free phone calls from their computers to any land line or mobile phone in the two countries. Skype is a VoIP program that you install on your computer to making calls over the internet. It’s always been free to call from one PC to another but now you can call regular phone in the US and Canada for free. Since it’s now free, I’m going to have to try out the quality of their network.
UPDATE: I just called my cell phone from Skype because I was curious to see what number came up in my caller ID, 1-000-012-3456 is what came up.

Original Star Wars DVDs Done Right

I was reading this article over at Wired.com about Lucasfilm re-releasing the original Star Wars movies on DVD in their original format. That means Han shoots Greedo WITHOUT Greedo shooting first; no stupid CGI Jabba the Hutt, etc. The only stupid thing is they’re including the special edition version (with Greedo shooting first, etc.) on the same discs. That means I’ll wind up with 2 copies of the special edition. Oh well, it’ll be worth it to have the version I know and love.
