My New Car

I ordered a 2007 Chevy Cobalt a few weeks ago and wasn’t expecting it to be in until mid-May. I got a phone call today saying it’s in and I can pick it up on Monday.

DD-WRT

I have replaced Sveasoft’s Alchemy firmware on my Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router with DD-WRT. It doesn’t look anything like the original Linksys firmware, like Sveasoft did, but it’s a lot newer than what I’ve been running.

Sportsman’s Night

I went to Sportsman’s Night at the Keystone Rod & Gun Club in Bath, PA last night and did very well. I came home with a Daiwa fishing rod & reel combo, fishing vest, gun case, and a Savage 22 caliber rifle.

Computer Movie Cliches

I saw this over on Digg.com and thought it was funny so I figured I’d post it here too. The original post is here.

COMPUTERS & ELECTRONICS
  • Word processors never display a cursor.
  • You never have to use the space-bar when typing long sentences.
  • Movie character never make typing mistakes.
  • All monitors display inch-high letters.
  • High-tech computers, such as those used by NASA, the CIA, or some such
governmental institution, will have easy to understand graphical
    interfaces.
  • Those that don’t, have incredibly powerful text-bases command shells
that can correctly understand and execute commands typed in plain
    english.
  • Corollary: you can gain access to any information you want by simply
typing “ACCESS ALL OF THE SECRET FILES” on any keyboard
  • Likewise, you can infect a computer with a destructive virus by simply
    typing “UPLOAD VIRUS” (see “Fortress”)
  • All computers are connected. You can access the information on the
villain’s desktop computer, even if it’s turned off.
  • Powerful computers beep whenever you press a key or whenever the screen
changes. Some computers also slow down the output on the screen so that
it doesn’t go faster than you can read. The *really* advanced ones also
emulate the sound of a dot-matrix printer.
  • All computer panels have thousands of volts and flash pots just
underneath the surface. Malfunctions are indicated by a bright flash, a
puff of smoke, a shower of sparks, and an explosion that forces you
    backwards.
  • People typing away on a computer will turn it off without saving
    the data.
  • A hacker can get into the most sensitive computer in the world before
intermission and guess the secret password in two tries.
  • Any PERMISSION DENIED has an OVERRIDE function (see “Demolition Man”
    and countless others).
  • Complex calculations and loading of huge amounts of data will be
accomplished in under three seconds. Movie modems usually appear to
transmit data at the speed of two gigabytes per second.
  • When the power plant/missile site/whatever overheats, all the control
panels will explode, as will the entire building.
  • If you display a file on the screen and someone deletes the file, it
also disappears from the screen (e.g Clear and Present Danger).
  • If a disk has got encrypted files, you are automagically asked for a
password when you try to access it.
  • No matter what kind of computer disk it is, it’ll be readable by any
system you put it into. All application software is usable by all
    computer platforms.
  • The more high-tech the equipment, the more buttons it has (Aliens).
However, everyone must have been highly trained, because the buttons
    aren’t labelled.
  • Most computers, no matter how small, have reality-defying
three-dimensional, active animation, photo-realistic graphics capability.

  • Laptops, for some strange reason, always seem to have amazing real-time
video phone capabilities and the performance of a CRAY Supercomputer.
  • Whenever a character looks at a VDU, the image is so bright that it
projects itself onto his/her face (see “Alien”, “2001″).

FireGPG

I was checking out Digg.com and saw a story submitted about a Firefox extension, called FireGPG, that adds encryption to webmail. Lately I’ve gotten more into PGP/GPG encryption including sharing my public key here and allowing encryption on my Contact Me page.

FireGPG is a Firefox extension which brings an interface to crypt, decrypt, sign or verify the signature of a text in any web page, using GPG. It will support some webmails. Right now, only GMail is supported, some useful buttons are added in the interface of this webmail !

April Fools

I decided to go to Old Bridge Township Raceway Park today and go drag racing. They gave out a copy of the track’s newspaper which I read while waiting to race. One of the news snippets caught my attention:

As we go to press, the news is breaking from Raceway Park management that the owners of Old Bridge Township Raceway Park just closed on the 100% purchase of New Jersey’s two other drag strips, Atco Raceway and Island Dragway, and are now owned by Raceway Park. Immediate plans by the new owners are to modernize both race tracks with all new grandstands, new three story over the track VIP suite buildings, fully paved pit and spectator parking areas, fresh concrete and track pavement, all new food and beverage restaurants and racing at least five days a week at each track. It was also announced that each track will be awarded a national event. The names of both Atco and Island will change, as multi million dollar facility naming rights deals have been signed with two major corporations. Lastly, you should be advised that what you’ve just read is completely false and is an April Fool’s Day joke on you!

As I was reading it, I was excited that there’d be more national events in the area. I’ve been to Island Dragway and the pit/spectator parking could definitely use a repaving. It pissed me off to read that it was an April Fool’s Day joke.
