Talk About Beating A Dead Bird

According to Variety, “The Crow” will be remade. Personally, I think this is a big mistake. The original movie with Brandon Lee was a great film and belongs in the list of movies that should never be remade (Godfather I & II, Empire Strikes Back, and most of the Brat Pack movies from the ’80s also fall on this list). I didn’t think too much of the TV series or any of the movies that followed, but unlike most people, I do know that the movies that followed weren’t meant to be true sequels. There are people that think that if Brandon Lee hadn’t died, the sequels would’ve had him in it. That is not true. The comic books which the movies are based on each have their own “Crow”.

“Whereas Proyas’ original was gloriously gothic and stylized, the new movie will be realistic, hard-edged and mysterious, almost documentary-style,” Norrington told Daily Variety.

I’ve seen all the other movies and even have them all on DVD, so I’m sure I’ll see this one but I may just wait until it shows up on Netflix.

Netflix

I’ve finally decided to sign up for Netflix and stop going to Blockbuster. The last few times I’ve gone to Blockbuster, they never have anything good in stock and all the movies I don’t care about seeing are the ones that have the “In-Stock Guarantee”. Besides, Netflix winds up being cheaper. I’m on the cheapest plan, $5 a month for two DVDs a month with one at a time. Blockbuster now is almost $5 for one DVD. Netflix also seems to have a lot more movies in their selection instead of assuming what the public wants to see like Blockbuster does.

Computer Movie Cliches

I saw this over on Digg.com and thought it was funny so I figured I’d post it here too. The original post is here.

COMPUTERS & ELECTRONICS
  • Word processors never display a cursor.
  • You never have to use the space-bar when typing long sentences.
  • Movie character never make typing mistakes.
  • All monitors display inch-high letters.
  • High-tech computers, such as those used by NASA, the CIA, or some such
governmental institution, will have easy to understand graphical
    interfaces.
  • Those that don’t, have incredibly powerful text-bases command shells
that can correctly understand and execute commands typed in plain
    english.
  • Corollary: you can gain access to any information you want by simply
typing “ACCESS ALL OF THE SECRET FILES” on any keyboard
  • Likewise, you can infect a computer with a destructive virus by simply
    typing “UPLOAD VIRUS” (see “Fortress”)
  • All computers are connected. You can access the information on the
villain’s desktop computer, even if it’s turned off.
  • Powerful computers beep whenever you press a key or whenever the screen
changes. Some computers also slow down the output on the screen so that
it doesn’t go faster than you can read. The *really* advanced ones also
emulate the sound of a dot-matrix printer.
  • All computer panels have thousands of volts and flash pots just
underneath the surface. Malfunctions are indicated by a bright flash, a
puff of smoke, a shower of sparks, and an explosion that forces you
    backwards.
  • People typing away on a computer will turn it off without saving
    the data.
  • A hacker can get into the most sensitive computer in the world before
intermission and guess the secret password in two tries.
  • Any PERMISSION DENIED has an OVERRIDE function (see “Demolition Man”
    and countless others).
  • Complex calculations and loading of huge amounts of data will be
accomplished in under three seconds. Movie modems usually appear to
transmit data at the speed of two gigabytes per second.
  • When the power plant/missile site/whatever overheats, all the control
panels will explode, as will the entire building.
  • If you display a file on the screen and someone deletes the file, it
also disappears from the screen (e.g Clear and Present Danger).
  • If a disk has got encrypted files, you are automagically asked for a
password when you try to access it.
  • No matter what kind of computer disk it is, it’ll be readable by any
system you put it into. All application software is usable by all
    computer platforms.
  • The more high-tech the equipment, the more buttons it has (Aliens).
However, everyone must have been highly trained, because the buttons
    aren’t labelled.
  • Most computers, no matter how small, have reality-defying
three-dimensional, active animation, photo-realistic graphics capability.

  • Laptops, for some strange reason, always seem to have amazing real-time
video phone capabilities and the performance of a CRAY Supercomputer.
  • Whenever a character looks at a VDU, the image is so bright that it
projects itself onto his/her face (see “Alien”, “2001″).

DirecTV BTTF Commercial

They been showing the DirecTV Back To The Future commercial a lot lately on TV and there’s just one thing wrong with it (other than there wasn’t any DirecTV or HDTV in 1985). The cut on Doc’s forehead is on the wrong side. In the commercial, it’s above his left eye (right side of the screen). In the movies, it’s above his right eye (left side of the screen). Considering they used clips directly from the first movie, you’d think someone at DirecTV would’ve noticed that.

My Name In Movie Credits

I picked up a copy of Clerks II this morning while I’m in Houston, TX for work. I just got a chance to go through the long list of names after the closing credits for the MySpace promotion, and my name is definitely in there. I’ll try and get a decent screenshot later and add it to this post.

Two Months And Counting

In a little more than 2 months, Clerks II comes out on DVD. This also means in a little more than 2 months, I’ll get to see my name in the closing credits of a movie. :-) The movie officially comes out on November 28.

iTunes 7.0 And New iPods

Apple released iTunes 7.0 today which includes movies along with music and TV shows currently available. The pricing is comparable to buying the DVD in the stores except it’s basically already ripped so you can watch them on any PC/Mac or on an iPod including the new ones they released today. Apparently they realized how popular the different colors were for the iPod mini so they decided to release the iPod nano in the same colors. The new iPod shuffle was also redesigned and is now not much bigger than the click wheel interface to control it. iTunes 7.0 can now do gapless playback, which a lot of customers have been screaming for, and automatically import album artwork into the songs you import into your library. Before iTunes would only add the artwork for songs downloaded from the iTunes Music Store, so you would have to add the album artwork on your own. iTunes 7.0 can now sync with Outlook for your contacts and calendar information. Previously, you had to export vCards from Outlook and then copy them to the iPod manually.

Star Wars Unaltered DVDs

I just got back from Best Buy where I picked up Star Wars Episodes IV-VI on DVD with the original theatrical releases of the movies. That means I don’t have to settle for a CGI Jabba or Gredo shooting first in Episode IV. It sucks that they didn’t release them this way in the first place but I’m glad I have them, even though it cost me $50 to get them.

My Name In Movie Credits - Part 2

I don’t have to worry about finding out if my name made it into the closing credits of Clerks II. Everybody that had the Clerks II MySpace account in their friend list before July 21st will have their names in the closing credits of the DVD version of the movie. I changed my MySpace account display name to include my last name in the hopes that it would show up in the DVD. Previously, I only had my first name which won’t help much when I want to brag/show off.
