Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital

I was watching the news this morning and found out the Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital is now a NJ State Police training facility. From the News 12 website:

(03/23/06) MARLBORO – Eighteen New Jersey state troopers wrapped up an intense, three-day advanced firearms course in Marlboro Thursday.

The training took place at an abandoned psychiatric hospital on County Road 520. Although real bullets weren’t used, the officers did fire ammunition similar to paintballs. Some of the simulations officers dealt with included a suspicious traffic stop and an investigation into possible shots fired at a scene.

Officers say the simulations were the most realistic training exercises available. According to instructors, the intense training could ultimately save lives if an officer is presented with a dangerous situation.

Tillie Postage Stamps

I was going through some of the WeirdNJ groups on Yahoo and came across a link for postage stamps with Tillie face on them. For those of you who don’t know who Tillie is, Tillie was the smiling face on the side of the Palace Amusements in Asbury Park before they tore it down. To help remember Tillie and the Palace Amusements, there’s a site where you can buy Tille postage stamps.

Weird U.S. On History Channel

Weird U.S., brought to you by the same guys that brings you Weird NJ, will have a weekly television program on the History Channel. They’re replaying the show that aired around Christmas time as the pilot on Sunday, July 31, 2005. The first new episode will air Monday, August 1, 2005; and there will be a new episode every Monday after that. I saw the pilot episode when it aired back in December and thought it was okay. I’m a big fan of Weird NJ so I wasn’t too interested about the stuff outside of New Jersey. The story that they did do from Jersey, I already read about years ago in the magazine. Then again, the target audience is to the general public, not just those of us interested in Weird NJ/U.S. locations. The August 1 episode has the two Marks (Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman; the editors/creators of Weird NJ and Weird U.S.) going to New York City, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and Florida. At least the places/things from New York City I can go to and check out for myself.

Stone Living Room Destroyed

One of my favorite Weird NJ spots, the Stone Living Room, has been destroyed by vandals. For those of you who don’t know, the Stone Living Room was/is located in West Milford on top of a mountain in Norvin Green State Forest. The Stone Living Room was a large stone couch is a semicircle with a few “end tables” surrounding a fire. It looks like it was right out of the Flintstones. Thankfully, there is an effort underway, by fellow Weird NJ fans, to reconstruct the Living Room early next month.
