I went over to Netscape.com to see if they had updated the browser recently and I noticed that their home page was a lot like Digg.com. It allowed users to vote for news that shows up on the front page. I hope Kevin Rose is making some money off of this obvious copycat.
Looking over the stats on my sites, I have noticed that over 50% of the people that come here use Internet Explorer. I have installed the Spread Firefox plugin to pop up an alert bar when someone views this site with IE, and only IE. If you view the site with any other browser, the alert bar won’t show. I did this in an attempt to educate people how inferior IE is as a web browser and that there are other options out there that are safer to use. The link in the alert bar takes the person to a site where they can download Firefox but they can also download Opera, Flock, or Netscape as a web browser. Any of those are better choices than that damn blue e.
According to this c|net article, HP is going to install Netscape on their PC’s. Firefox, the browser I use, is based on Netscape. I’d rather see Firefox installed but really, as long as it’s something other then that damned blue e, I’ll be happy. Maybe people will learn that Internet Explorer =! the internet.
Netscape Browser 8.0 was released today, nearly two and a half months since the beta was released. It’s based on the code for Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3. It updates itself every day with a list of potentially harmful sites and warns you if you visit one of those sites. When I tried the beta version, I came across a few bugs which I’m hoping have been fixed in the final version. I’m going to try the final Netscape longer than I did the beta before I decide whether or not I like it as much or better than Firefox.
