BitTorrent + RSS

One of the podcasts I listen to is Adam Curry‘s Daily Source Code. Today, he did something that’s new to distributing media content, he created a .torrent for his podcast. The idea behind this is that instead of all of his subscribers downloading the same mp3 file from his server, they share from each other. This ultimately lowers bandwidth demands on the server and in some cases may help the file(s) to download faster. The downside to this is that you have to wait till the whole file is downloaded before you can listen to/watch it since it doesn’t download in order but in pieces. This isn’t a major fault since most of the time the files are downloading while I’m sleeping or at work, so when I wake up or come home, they’re completely downloaded. There’s a lot of potential for this type of technology as noted over at this guy’s site.

Looking For A New RSS Feed Reader

I’m looking for a new RSS feed reader. I started out using the built-in reader in Firefox. Then I wanted something that would let me know when there were new entries to the blogs I read the most. I am a big fan of the Sourceforge community. I’ve used Audacity, which is a great free audio editor and recorder, Azureus, which is a Java based (which means no adware/spyware) BitTorrent client, and Gaim, which is an IM client that handles AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber, and ICQ all in the same program. It’s because of my enjoyment with the open source software I have gotten from Sourceforge, that I decided to try their RSS reader Feedreader. It’s been pretty good but when I reboot the computer, it’ll list some of the blog entries that I’ve already read, as being new. It’ll also double up on blog entries so I’ll have 2 of the exact same entry, one right after the other. It’s a relatively small file though, only taking up less than 2MB on my hard drive. I went searching tonight for a new reader, and came across RssReader (original name, isn’t it?). It’s a bit large, but not much, only taking up about 9MB on my hard drive. It’ll take me a few days to decide if I like it, so I’m hanging onto Feedreader for now. It would be great if I could find something that could combine an RSS reader and a podcast catcher like iPodder.
